Last Stop on Market Street

De La Pena, Matt. (2015). Last Stop on Market Street. New York: Penguin.

It is Sunday after church and CJ and Grandma decide to take the bus across town.  As they are waiting for the bus while it rains, CJ sees his friend (Colby) drive off with his dad in a car and wonders why they don’t own a car.  Then Grandma and CJ get in the bus that drives them back to their neighborhood. But during the bus ride, he wishes he had an i pod like the boys in the bus. He asked how come the place he and his grandma went to was always so dirty. But the Grandma helps him look at the good and bright side of things by always having a positive response. He always wondered how his grandmother would find the beauty of things where he didn’t bother to observe.

Bold text and vibrant illustrations point out the great relationship only a grandma and her granchild can share.  The story can be used to illustrate the good side of things with what little we have.
