We are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball

Nelson, Kadir. (2008). We are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball. New York: Hyperion Books for Children.

This is the story of the Negro leagues that consists of talented great athletes and the determination of owners. They endure and overcome the segregation, hatred, low pay, and horrible conditions to just play the game they loved which was baseball.  They had to eat and sleep in the team’s bus and put up with the physical and mental abuse from the white players. A story for all those who love baseball and like to learn about the people who overcame the societal challenges in history.

This is a book that children can look up to who face societal conflicts or racial injustice as well as teach them about equality.  It also teaches children that the world is not perfect and sometimes regular people need to help change it by advocating their rights.
