Gaiman, Neil. (2008). The Graveyard book. New York: HarperCollins Publisher.
This is a story of a family that is
visciously murdered by an evil man they called Jack. But a small baby boy had somehow stepped out
of the house without being noticed and continued his journey tottering up the
hill and ending up in a cemetery. There he would encounter the ghosts of Mr.
and Mrs. Owens who would take the responsibility of becoming his ghostly
parents and take good care of him. They named
the boy Nobody Owens. They boy lived in the cementary and the ghosts would
protect him from the man Jack who murdered his family. The boy encounters
adventures and dangerous occasions in and out of his home, the graveyard. This
would teach him life lessons as he was growing up. A very creative and
interesting story that captures the liveliness and spookiness of the story in a
way that keeps readers engaged in this children’s scary book.
This could be a great start for motivating
and engaging children in creative writing and imaginative thinking.
